Early Life
Tuks Senganga, born Tumelo Kepadisa on May 2, 1981, is one of South Africa's most renowned and affluent musicians. Raised in Mafikeng, part of the former Bophuthatswana homeland, Tuks began his music journey in the early 2000s, performing at local venues. He often incorporates Setswana, an ethnic language, into his performances. Tuks started writing at the age of 12 in 1993, drawing inspiration from everyday life and his experiences growing up during the apartheid regime in Bophuthatswana, later known as the North West Province. In high school, he honed his hip-hop skills, at a time when hip-hop was still considered unconventional in South Africa. His breakthrough came in 2005 with his debut album, "Mafoko A Me," earning him the Best Hip Hop Album Award at the 12th Annual MTN South African Music Awards (SAMA).
Career Achievements
In 2005, during the rise of the motswako movement, Tuks released his first album, "Mafoko A Me" (My Words). Before its official launch, the album garnered significant attention with positive reviews, and several singles were already enjoying high rotation on national radio stations. "Mafoko A Me" earned Tuks his first South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Hip Hop Album.
In 2006, he followed up with "MC Prayer," which achieved gold certification within four months of its release. The album showcased a notable improvement in production style and quality compared to its predecessor. The lead single, "Monate Thwa," contributed to increased album sales, another SAMA nomination for Best Hip Hop Album, and a Metro FM Award.
Taking a two-year break from the industry, Tuks returned in 2008 with his third album, "Monopoly." The album delved into thought-provoking themes influenced by conspiracy theory documentaries. Tuks expressed concern about societal control by media, music, belief systems, and religion. During his hiatus, he founded his own record label, June/July Productions, focusing on artist and event management, communications, publishing, and music production. "Monopoly" won three awards: the Metro FM Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album, the Hype magazine Hip Hop Awards for Best Album, and the Best Solo Artist.
In 2010, Tuks independently released "Tshwanelo," a departure from his previous work. The title track became a chart-topper before the album's official release. The single "Let Me Live" even appealed to gospel fans. "Tshwanelo" received nominations at the 17th South African Music Awards (2011) and the Metro FM Awards in 2011.
In September 2012, Tuks dropped his fifth studio album, "Footprints." The lead single, "Bona Fela," served as the soundtrack for the popular South African TV drama series "Skeem Saam." Tuks collaborated with Next Music, South Africa's major independent label, for music, media, and digital distribution. After a successful UK tour in December 2011, he worked with Australian producer M-Phazes and New York-based songwriter Lydia Caesar on the album's second single, "Love Angel."
Tuks took a four-year hiatus before releasing "Botshe Botshe" in 2016. The album featured 19 tracks, including singles like "Gafa" and "Molopita," with collaborations from various South African artists like Mo Molemi and KayGizm (Morafe), as well as "Scar" from Botswana. Production credits included Seiso Tswak Baker, Rwess Louis, Blackout Beats, and Fatal aXetatic.
